My name is Kyle Schneebly. I own Big Dog Auto Detailing of Loudoun County. My services we've got three services for cars. Basically, we're a boutique operation. Right, we're a luxury boutique operation for your vehicle. We come directly to you. We have three levels of service. Basically a good, better, best. And yeah, our goal is really just to develop the relationships with our customers, our clients, and take care of their vehicles. I mean, it's the second. For most people it's the second most expensive purchase of their lives. So that's what we do we take care of their vehicles, establish relationships so you never have to worry about it again.
Speaker 2:I love it and you said you come to us.
Speaker 1:We do, we do, how does?
Speaker 2:that work.
Speaker 1:I have two trucks on the road every day. Each truck comes fully equipped. The only thing we require is water and power. We bring everything else when the weather is like it is now. We do have a shop in Percival that we work out of. We do have brick and mortar, but prefer to come to the house.
Speaker 2:Okay, that we work out of.
Speaker 1:We do have brick and mortar, but prefer to come to the house. Okay, yeah, we started this business over COVID. Oh, wow, we're almost five years old now and it was just a perfect business to start during COVID. Yeah, and people just love the convenience of us coming to the house. Oh for sure, a lot of people, a lot of our clients, work from home. We come, we show up, we're there for four or five hours and when we leave, they see our brand new car again.
Speaker 2:Love it, love that and now tell me how you came up with the name of your company. It's kind of intimidating. It's cool but it's intimidating.
Speaker 1:So just a little backstory. I was in the hospitality business for 30 years. Okay, started in restaurants. My wife and I are both pro figure skaters Olympic figure skaters so I started serving and bartending to help my mom pay for lessons. And I was in the hospitality business for 30 years, ultimately ending up in Miami Beach for 25 years, general manager of some of the biggest nightclubs in the country. So fast forward. I'm from DC, the in the country. So fast forward. I'm from DC, the DC area, annandale. I received a nice opportunity to rebuild a nightclub in Adams Morgan in DC. Covid hit about four weeks into the rebuild so we got stuck.
Speaker 2:We were stuck.
Speaker 1:Yeah, just kind of stuck. My brother lives in Leesburg. I was with my brother. Yeah, just kind of stuck. My brother lives in Leesburg and I was with my brother. And yeah, we were on our way back to Miami. We left Miami, went to Vegas on our way back to Miami, got this nice opportunity here in DC and then COVID hit out of work. All the restaurants, all the bars, the nightclub shut down like many other businesses. And I've always been a car guy, so cars and motorcycles it's been my thing pretty much my whole life. So, yeah, so I started doing that and I was pretty good at it. And, long story short, what we thought was going to be something small turned into something pretty big. What we thought was going to be something small turned into something pretty big. But to get back to the original question with the name, my wife and I we're avid dog owners lovers. We have two Italian Mastiffs coming in, Ooh big dogs.
Speaker 1:Yeah, our old man. He just turned 10. He's 140. And we've got a pup that just hit $1.30. Oh my goodness, we love our big dogs, yes. So my wife? Actually I can't take credit. My wife says just big dog auto detailing, and we love our dogs, I mean intensely.
Speaker 2:Yes, that's awesome.
Speaker 1:That's how we got the name Big Dog.
Speaker 2:I love it and I love how it was, like your love for those big dogs.
Speaker 1:Like let's bring it on dogs, let's bring it on yeah Well, everybody loves a good big dog, especially when they're teddy bears.
Speaker 2:You even got the logo and everything of them we do.
Speaker 1:My logo is actually Is it, your dog. It's my dog and my Camaro. I've got a pretty sweet Camaro. It's my dog and my Camaro is my logo. I love.
Speaker 2:How personal that is Thank you so much for sharing that. Of course, of course. And now, what are some marketing tips or things that maybe have worked for you or aren't working for you? Would you mind sharing that?
Speaker 1:with us? No, not at all, not at all. So in a lot of business I think, especially my previous one with the nightclubs it's a popularity contest. In my opinion, you've just got to be honest and just be a cool person and somebody that people relate to. That was easy. That's the easy part for me. But starting a business in an area that I'm not from even though I'm from Miami, that was gone for 25 years, not knowing anyone in the auto business, it was pretty intimidating. So we started just like, I think, a lot of other people Facebook advertising just to get the word out that we offer the service. So you know the marketing. You know we used a couple different marketing companies. It was definitely helpful. It was eye-opening and helpful. It certainly was. It certainly was. But at the end of the day, I think what it really boiled down to was just making sure that my employees, myself, of course, everyone that we came into contact with it was just important that we became friends.
Speaker 2:Yeah.
Speaker 1:So you know I look at it as you know what we do. Some could say it's an invasion of your privacy. We go through everything, right. We clean everything, we recondition cars, so we're under your seats, in between your seats, in your glove box, Everywhere, Everywhere. So it's very important that you trust me and trust my guys and with that trust, I am now, thankfully, we're on. I don't want to say cruise control, that's a terrible term. However, we don't advertise anymore. I don't need to say cruise control, that's a terrible term. However, we don't advertise anymore. I don't need to spend those marketing dollars anymore. We're all repeat.
Speaker 2:That's the dream, right there.
Speaker 1:All repeat and referral now and I'm just very, very blessed for that. Yeah absolutely.
Speaker 2:That's the best referral. You can get Word of mouth and people just coming back and referring you 100%, absolutely. And I'm sure that it took a lot of like hard work and putting in just like all the hours, all the work. Oh, yeah, and obviously the service, the customer service, has to be there, yeah.
Speaker 1:What's the 10,000-hour rule right? Yeah, you know the 10,000-hour rule. We've certainly exceeded that. But most importantly, I think you just have to have a love for cars. I mean, you know, in Miami I was very blessed to throw parties for 25 years. Celebrities, all that glamour stuff, that's so cool. It was a blast. But my passion for cars and motorcycles and boats and things, it's great. I mean it's very satisfying work. Yeah, people love the videos online. You know it's very satisfying.
Speaker 2:Yes, Seeing something super filthy Like the slow motion? Yeah, for sure, Looking crazy and then looking like you know.
Speaker 1:But seeing the smiles on people's faces when we're done, it's cool.
Speaker 2:Absolutely.
Speaker 1:It's a pretty cool game.
Speaker 2:And I want to go back to your history again with like nightclubs and like celebrities and like, because that's cool. Do you have any like stories? You don't have to name names? Do you have like somebody, like a famous actor, one day came in?
Speaker 1:I have being. You know, miami Beach is.
Speaker 2:Party Central.
Speaker 1:Yeah, yeah, we started it. I started this in my nightclub stuff in DC Many, many in the early 90s.
Speaker 2:Yeah.
Speaker 1:And I'm one of those people my wife as well, you know. We're Olympic figure skaters. We just strive to be the best at everything we do, whatever it is. Just find a way, if not to be the best, at least play ball with the best right, yeah, yeah.
Speaker 1:So for me in the nightclubs we moved. My best friend and I moved down to South Beach in the mid-90s and South Beach was literally the center of the world for nightlife, so it was fun. Yeah, I mean. Yeah, I've got more stories. I could bore you to death with them.
Speaker 2:No.
Speaker 1:But one of my favorite ones. I'm a rock and roll guy.
Speaker 2:Yeah.
Speaker 1:My son's name is Rush. I mean, I'm a rock and roll to the core.
Speaker 2:I love that.
Speaker 1:And you know I grew up with ACDC and Motley Crue was on the walls and stuff like that. I was a huge Motley Crue fan. Yeah, one day I got to meet Vince Neal from Motley Crue and not only did we meet that night at the club, but we became pretty much inseparable for a few years. Oh, that's so cool. So that was. You know, it's one of the cool things. Like you know, this dude's on my wall, this kid. Then I get to meet him in my setting in Miami and next thing you know, we're driving all over the place just having a blast together for years.
Speaker 2:I love how you're like I could bore you with my stories. Not bore, yeah, not bore.
Speaker 1:You can ask my wife that she's heard them all. Lucky does Many times Many times.
Speaker 2:I love it back to also COVID and starting up a business during that time.
Speaker 1:Can you tell me what that was?
Speaker 2:like and what you were thinking? Or did it happen before you even knew and it just happened? Or were you just like F it? I'm going to start it, even though this is happening.
Speaker 1:I think it blindsided a lot of people, right? You know, being in the nightlife for so many years, that's what I knew. I could teach you how to night skate and I could build you a nightclub. That was it. And then, when it happened, yeah, we didn't know what to do. We were bummed, we couldn't go home.
Speaker 1:If you remember, when COVID hit New York and South Florida, they were the two hot spots on the news all the time. So we were, yeah, it was rough. But then I put two and two together and I said listen, nobody wanted to even shake hands with COVID. Right, you want to be in the same room? Nobody knew what it was or what was going to happen. And I'm sitting there like, well, you know what, if we could clean vehicles the one thing you could do and I know this, you know we've got a real fun car home you could go for drives. Right, it's one thing you could do Drive around, just get out of the house. So it's like, well, let's go, we can clean and disinfect vehicles With modern technology. You can pay me through Venmo, we don't even have to shake. You know, it was one of those things. It was just the timing believe it or not, was perfect for a mobile business like that. You know, everybody wanted their car cleaned and disinfected.
Speaker 1:Yes, Wanted everything disinfected, yep, and we found a way to do that and we built quite a few relationships along the way. We're almost five years old. We just hit our 5,000th car, whoa 2,500 customers now clients.
Speaker 2:Love it. Yeah, it's pretty rad For a boutique shop. That's pretty damn good, yeah it's been pretty cool. Good, I'm happy to hear that. And what have been some of your most memorable or proudest works that you've been able to do?
Speaker 1:Well, you know you get. I'll tell you one of the coolest things that we did. It just happened. Last year we resurrected a school bus. Okay, and I know that sounds kind of weird.
Speaker 2:It does. Let me tell you, it does Let me tell you it does.
Speaker 1:It was a situation for a private client and the school had been in their family for many, many years and they didn't quite have the funds to go out and buy new school buses. And I said I think we can do something for you here, and we spent four days on it, my crew and I, and we spent four days on it, my crew and I, and we spent four days on it and it literally looked new again and they were so excited and happy. I mean, we saved them thousands and thousands of dollars and we got pictures back with all the kids on the bus. It was just. You know, it was one of those cool things.
Speaker 2:Yeah, it was a good give back and helping the community out in that way. Oh, for sure, that's awesome.
Speaker 1:Helping the community out in that way, oh for sure that's awesome.
Speaker 2:How many buses was it.
Speaker 1:One.
Speaker 2:One, okay Big job.
Speaker 1:Old school, yeah, big, big bus, so those kind of things are cool. Yeah, we just did the. I think it was a 1932 fire truck for Leesburg volunteer here.
Speaker 2:I do hear them passing by.
Speaker 1:Yeah, yeah, it's kind of a big deal for Leesburg and um that particular engine's going into their, into their museum, and one of their, um, one of their firemen had, uh had recently passed and it was his favorite truck, uh, so it was going into the procession and they called us up and asked if we'd be interested in doing that. And that was cool, a lot of brass out of you know they.
Speaker 1:You know, back in 1932, they built things a little differently than they do now. So, um, those are the kind of things that every now and then, we get to do.
Speaker 2:Yeah.
Speaker 1:We're very involved with the fire departments from Sterling to Leesburg Ashburn Fire Department.
Speaker 2:Look at that.
Speaker 1:We do a lot of work for them and we're very proud of that. Very proud of that work.
Speaker 2:Yeah, as you should be. That is awesome, that is so great. That's so great, that's cool. I almost feel like you should like for social media, have like an idea, like when you do like school bus and stuff, like obviously you're probably on top of that.
Speaker 1:It's like getting the befores and afters and like kind of a time lapse of you like showing it going fast?
Speaker 1:I think people would be like pretty amazed to see that they do love them. They really do, guy, you know we put those up and we get a lot of comments on that. I'm a biker, you know, so a lot of bikers hit me up and you know, oh man, that last bite you know. So, yeah, I mean, it's just a great community around here. It's a great car community, motorcycle community here. So thankfully they've welcomed us and we just seem to fit right in with it.
Speaker 2:Okay, I love it. And what do you like to do on your free time when you're not working on cars, when you're not a professional figure skater?
Speaker 1:That was many moons ago and quite a few pounds ago. Yeah, my free time really is just about both my kids. Now they live up in the city, they live in Manhattan, okay. So my wife and I, we like to take our little road trips up to New York. We're not doing that. We're always doing something with the dogs, our dogs. We took them both to New York and we walked them down in Times Square with these two giant dogs.
Speaker 2:I bet that looked crazy.
Speaker 1:They thought they were the celebrities. Everybody's taking pictures with them. We try to keep it fun.
Speaker 2:Yeah, absolutely I can't imagine that, though, because everybody in New York, everyone, we try to keep it fun. Yeah, absolutely I can't imagine that, though, because everybody in New York, everyone in New York, they either have like, when you see a big dog, it's like a golden retriever, but it's mostly little tall, toy, small doggies out there.
Speaker 1:Oh, for sure, for sure, so I'm sure they were like wait a minute, oh yeah.
Speaker 2:In New York and two of them. Oh yeah, I'm. I wish you got that for social media.
Speaker 1:It's cool, it's cool. The dogs love it, the kids love it. You know, can I take a pic? Yeah, everybody wants to take a pic. Go ahead, go ahead. They're the stars. I love it. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Speaker 2:And where do you see yourself in the next five years with your business and personally?
Speaker 1:So, yeah, with the business you example, I would have a staff of 10 people up to 150 people. Well, with this business, I found that growing it just for the sake of money wasn't right for me and I found the sweet spot. Now, it took about five years right to find the sweet spot and you know, to find someone with an eye like I have for detail you know, we're literally a detail business it's hard to find people with that passion and that eye and the work ethic. Yeah, so, trying to feed the beast and grow it and which I did, I mean I think our second year we were up to about 15 employees and like four trucks on the road every day, but feeding that beast it was a lot of headache, you know and ultimately, the bottom dollar didn't really change that much so so we had to work at finding the sweet spot.
Speaker 1:So, to answer your question, in five years I think we're in a good spot. Right now. I've got a couple guys that have been with me for years, grown men. They know what they're doing, they're very trustworthy, and I think we're just going to keep nurturing what we've built. To be honest with you, I'm not trying to grow it, we're not trying to branch out. You know this is a very unique area for what we do. Yeah, you know it's not cheap, right, but the service itself is wonderful. It's one of those things. There's $100,000 cars everywhere around here, right? Yeah, and you want to those things? There's $100,000 cars everywhere around here, right yeah.
Speaker 1:And you want to protect that so you can go through car washes and keep them clean. But that doesn't protect anything. When you give them to us, we protect it. We protect your leather. We clean with steam, we don't clean with chemicals. The paint the paint. We do ceramic sealants Of course ceramic wax. We sealants, of course ceramic wax. We do all the things that you're supposed to do to make them shine constantly. At least keep them to where, even if you see us once a year, once a year, you know you're going to get that new car feel. Everybody likes that new car feel.
Speaker 2:Yes, we do. I love that.
Speaker 1:I think we're just going to keep nurturing what we're doing. I think we found our sweet spot.
Speaker 2:Yay, good for you, and how many people do you currently have?
Speaker 1:There's three of us. I've got my two guys and myself. Wow, like I said, I don't do as much work as I used to. Yeah, my guys do a great job. I'm at a point now where I like to handle the unusual things. Yes, you know, the Ferrari, lamborghini guys aren't really that's not really my lane, yeah, but we do get them. Okay, I handle those Cool.
Speaker 2:Fun, you know.
Speaker 1:So yeah, I mean, when there's unusual things, I definitely jump in.
Speaker 2:Okay, I love that, that's awesome, that is awesome, and now I love that. That's awesome, that is awesome. And now I see that you have some packages. Do you want to talk about those, just for people who are looking and wondering what would be the best fit for them? I see you've got the platinum service, gold service and silver package service and then also some car truck. That, yeah.
Speaker 1:I mean so for us. I try to be as fair as you can possibly be and an absolutely honest businessman, right? I need that trust in order to succeed, so I keep it simple. Just, you can consider it a good, better, best right. The gold package is the one in the middle and that's the one that we do about 95% of the time. Okay, that is our full factory reset. That's for reset your interior with steam, full steam clean. Nothing gets past steam, by the way. Um, so we do full steam clean on the interior and on the exterior. Full paint correction with ceramic wax. That's the one. If you do once a year, you will literally never have to worry about your vehicle. Thank God that.
Speaker 1:That's the one, if you do once a year, you will literally never have to worry about your vehicle. Thank God that's the one right. Some people like their vehicles maintained more than that. So that's the silver package for me. So you come to us once a year for the gold and maybe six months later you still want it to feel good, but you don't necessarily need the entire steam bath and paint correction and all that. So that's a good hand wash and wipe down and vacuum and things. Our ultimate protection is the platinum. That is a ceramic sealant and that is good for three to five years. That covers all of your glass and paint. So what that means is for your paint. We protect the paint. We're not exactly protecting paint. We're protecting the clear coat, right? So your clear coat is what protects your pain. Most people don't understand that point of it. So when you get those little scratches and swirls when you go through a car wash that we all get yeah, that's actually scratches in your clear coat.
Speaker 2:I always thought that I was like. You know, I was yeah, yeah, yeah.
Speaker 1:No, that's your clear coat. So we can come in with our buffers and our machines and all the tools that we have and remove those. But once we remove those, we need to replace that with wax or a sealant. Yeah, and that's what keeps your paint fresh.
Speaker 2:I love that. No, I love that. You have something for everybody out there, for sure, for sure, and we do bikes and boats. Oh.
Speaker 1:School buses, as we already mentioned School buses.
Speaker 2:Okay, the magic school bus.
Speaker 1:Dump trucks and farm equipment, you name it. If it's on wheels, we've done it.
Speaker 2:I love that so if you're listening out there and you've got like a boat or something or anything, oh for sure, for sure, he's your guy, kyle's your guy, absolutely. You know, your service kind of reminds me of that MTV. I love that show too. I love that show Right, absolutely it's like you're like exhibit for like Loudoun County. Yeah, well, that's cool.
Speaker 1:I like that. Yeah, yeah, but no, just to give you an example, someone was referring to me last night. Yeah, I'm that guy.
Speaker 1:I'm going to answer the phone at 9 o'clock at night. I'm just that, dude, I'll answer your phone at 9 o'clock and we spoke for a half an hour and total education for this gentleman. Yeah, and people wonder what's going on, what am I spending my money on, and what works and what doesn't work and all this kind of stuff. Yeah, we spent a half an hour together and he didn't even book. He says listen, I got this, I got to fix a little bit of pain on my car. I'm calling you back. Awesome, I'll talk to you for half an hour. I enjoy the education of things. I was a skating coach with my clubs as a general manager.
Speaker 2:Nightclubs.
Speaker 1:Yeah, I enjoy teaching and learning. I love all that stuff.
Speaker 2:I feel like you've led quite the interesting life like cars, bikes, nightclubs, and now just Leesburg, virginia. From Miami, it's just like, oh my goodness.
Speaker 1:Like I'm sure you've got some good stories. Yeah, oh, lots of stories. Yeah, maybe somewhat appropriate for this podcast oh, darn it, darn it. Lots of stories.
Speaker 2:Yeah, We'll have to go off the record. Yeah there you go, there you go Love it and now recognized, or you hope that it gets recognized.
Speaker 1:Well, you know, I don't know about recognized. I've never been one that needed that. I don't need the pat on the back and the recognition. What I need is I need to fill my soul. I do that through giving. So we gift quite a few gift certificates throughout the year to various charities around town. If anybody's listening, with schools, we do a lot for schools and teachers. You know not everyone can afford $300, $400 for a full detail and especially with the firefighters and the teachers, and you know people that don't make millions of dollars. I love, absolutely love giving, giving back, give certificates to people that really need and deserve it.
Speaker 2:I bet they're like what? This is my car.
Speaker 1:Yeah, oh for sure, they come out and they freak out, you know, and there's no better feeling than that.
Speaker 2:I believe it.
Speaker 1:There's been a lot of hugs. Oh my gosh, you know. Oh my gosh. One guy cried on me. You just saved me $50,000 on a new van. My wife left, you know. Awesome, I love it, I love it. So yeah, the give back is cool, but it's certainly not for accolades or pats on the back. I just really dig that.
Speaker 2:I had to dig that out of you. You weren't even sharing that before.
Speaker 1:So I appreciate you.
Speaker 2:Yeah, and it's good If there's other people, maybe schools, who want to work together.
Speaker 1:this is good information to know 100%. You call me. I never say no to that stuff, yeah.
Speaker 2:I love it, thank you. Thank you for sharing that Absolutely, that perhaps you would like to share on the podcast for our listeners, whether it's about yourself, your personal life, your business, your industry, maybe fun facts about cars, maybe you've got a book in the works. You have the floor, you know what?
Speaker 1:I think, no, just from whatever I've done from early on, with the skating becoming national champion, all this kind of stuff, and the nightclubs with all that stuff, and now with the cars, it's just being real. You know, I don't do well with. I like looking people in the eye. I like when people look me back in the eye and please and thank yous, go a long way. Yes, you know, just being civil and cool, yeah, and I think in business, for me that's what it's about. I've done all kinds of things, been all kinds of places. If you're nice and courteous and cool, you got me.
Speaker 2:You got me.
Speaker 1:So that's what I try to give off to you.
Speaker 2:Yeah, I love that. Hopefully Wifey protects you too, because sometimes you don't want people to take too much and you've got to be careful. So hopefully wifey can be like Kyle she does Good. You've got to have that person. Yes, she does yes.
Speaker 1:She does. But you know, I can't. You know what I do is I counter. I do a lot of things myself. So, for example, if I give gift certificates to a school, I don't you know, most of the time I'm the one, I'm the one going there and showing up. You know she can. You know? Watch your payroll, watch this.
Speaker 2:You know all that kind of stuff that we all do Well.
Speaker 1:I don't have to watch payroll if I'm doing it Right.
Speaker 2:So if I'm doing it, you know I got this, I got this. You know what I mean. I got this, okay, okay.
Speaker 1:Yeah, wifey is amazing. We've been together 27 years. Shout out Wifey. Well, wifey's the best.
Speaker 2:Yeah, she's the best. I love that. I'm happy to hear that. All right, so I literally could talk to you all day. I really could. I appreciate that. Yeah, this is cool. Yeah, I'm glad you came, yeah, and you said you've done these before. Okay, period, love it.
Speaker 1:My final question is do you have a quote, a mantra, a saying? Maybe a song lyric that has inspired you or that has always resonated with you, and would you like to? Share that? Wow, that's a great question. Um, I don't know if I could come up with something specific. I think what I was just telling you is just it's just me, you know. Just be an open book.
Speaker 2:Yeah.
Speaker 1:Just be an open book, be cool, be authentic, and you got me and hopefully I've got you.
